IRENE'S CLASS:

What is it like to be honest rather than fierce? Awkward as well as coordinated? Both internal, external, and all other states in between? This class is for anyone interested in a deeper experience of Self when dancing and performing. It is geared towards intermediate-advanced level dancers who have an openness to improvisation. Each class we will begin with connecting to our bodies’ scaffolding, the skeleton, continue through neuromuscular training patterns to awaken muscles, and then I will provide composed dance sequences and improvisational propositions for participants to experiment with. You may recognize some class material from contemporary/post-modern/ballet/yoga traditions. By the end of class, my hope is for participants to expand their expressive range and become more intuitive dancers.

BIO:
Irene Hsi is a dancer, performer, and movement teacher.  As a child, she studied Chinese traditional dance and ballet. After studying modern, West African, and Butoh dance traditions, she is currently practicing contemporary dance with a focus on improvisation and movement-based theater.  Originally from CA, Irene lived and performed in New York City from 2008 to 2014 before moving to the Boston area in January 2014. Some of the artists she has had the pleasure of working with over the years include Jill Sigman/thinkdance, Anneke Hansen Dance, Michele Torino, E.K.K.O Dance Collective, Ming Wong, and Allyson Green Dance. She has also originated and developed multiple theater/installation works with Brooklyn-based experimental performance company The Nerve Tank. In addition to performing at venues like Dixon Place, HERE Arts Center, Roulette, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, and Gibney Dance Center, she has also performed site-specific works at places such as the Museum of the Moving Image, the World Financial Center Winter Garden, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the Brooklyn Lyceum. While in NYC, Irene studied movement with the faculty at Movement Research, in particular Klein technique with Barbara Mahler and kinesthetic and functional anatomy with Irene Dowd. Irene is also an ISHTA yoga certified instructor, and also worked as a Teaching Artist for the Coalition for Hispanic Family Services in Queens, NY.

MICHAEL'S CLASS:

phraseology - this class is designed to get you to focus on the effort exerted by your body & commit overwhelming amounts of movement material to memory. #secondnature i will make a phrase weekly, and will tag it on to what was made the week prior. #compounding class structure: show up --> warm up with improvisation --> learn a brief movement sequence --> learn a minute+ of a full sequence weekly structure: repeat class structure --> tag on last week's sequence this class is designed to challenge a dancer's stamina. as a smoker I understand the importance of execution to stay in shape. this class is oriented around pushing you to execute clarity through a state of exhaustion. this class is for a person looking for something cumulative i am committed to you. #dating i am committed to your body. #respect i am committed to the structures. #capital (we learn by doing and copying. questions are kept to a minimum. repeated action is at the heart of memorization.)

partnering - we arrive in the space. we talk about weight. we improvise on themes of weight. we carry each other across the floor. i will teach partnering phrases that are designed to help you retain sequences of touch. we will articulate what it means to be responsible for a body. we will converse about and recodify positions of the body (moments the body passes through) that are successful for bearing weight. we will be direct with each other. we will treat each others' bodies with respect. we will work. we will do some heavy lifting, bruh.
