FALL FUNDAMENTALS SERIES - The Foundation of Contact Improvisation
1) September 18th - OLIVIER BESSON
"Contact Improvisation (CI) started as a means to explore the physical forces imposed on the body by gravity and by the physics of momentum. This workshop is for dancers, movers and performers who want to use CI to develop their understanding of partnering. CI can also be used as a tool for choreographic research. In this class, we will work with sensations and images to establish patterns of movement through direct action (roll, slide, spiral, rise, fall, counterbalance, support, lift, loft and catch). Areas of exploration will include affirming a relationship to ground, releasing excess muscular tension, experiencing an internal sense of movement, following points of contact, expanding spatial awareness and integrating leading and following skills in partnering."
2) November 6th - Amii Legendre
3) December 4th - Neige Christenson
Three Saturday Afternoons, 12-6pm (with a small break)
New and experienced dancers alike will benefit from these one day workshops designed to focus on the foundational concepts of Contact Improvisation. Every teacher has their own view of the most basic features of a contact improv dance and what makes us Contact Dancers; now you get to experience a range of beliefs and exercises from three different points of view.
Beginners and veterans are welcome and encouraged.
Enjoy single classes or pre-register for all three at a discounted price.

teaches a “creative movement” approach to dance. Fostering the love of moving and dancing is our chief goal. Our young dancers discover their own wide range of movements varying in size, shape, feeling, and speed. This self-discovery is fun. It develops concentration and teaches self-discipline which promotes self-confidence. The use of music instills new appreciation and emphasizes auditory and rhythmic skills. Working with props strengthens eye-hand coordination. It is our aim that with increasing experience, our students will make their dancing expressive and impressive.

Class begins with a warm-up, designed to effectively increase flexibility and strength for dancers, reminding us to keep a safe and proper alignment. After the warm-up, across the floor exercises refine skills such as battements, jetes and pirouettes... simultaneously working cardio. The remainder of the class is learning choreography, often from the company repertory, challenging students’ style and movement vocabulary. Class is designed to teach excellent technique to adults from an encouraging, soulful mindset - The learning never stops!
$12 Single Class (Pay inside studio. Cash or checks made payable to Urbanity Dance.)
