(Boston, Mass.) - The Dance Program at Boston University is pleased to present DANCE SHOWCASE 2010 featuring work by alumni, faculty, and guests, including Boston Ballet II (BBII). Performances are Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2, at 8 p.m. at the Boston University Dance Theater, 915 Commonwealth Avenue. There are several premieres and live accompaniment.
BBII joins choreographers Stephanie Creary, Margot Parsons, DeAnna Pellecchia, Ingrid Schatz, and Micki Taylor-Pinney, in collaboration with Ann Brown Allen and Lynn Modell. Members of the summer teen apprenticeship program, Reach, will perform a KRUMP piece choreographed by company member, Ashton Lites.
Boston University has an extensive dance program offering students and the general public traditional technique classes as well as more social and contemporary forms. The roster for this concert reflects the diversity of the curriculum and takes an inclusive look at what constitutes concert dance.
Kairos Dance Theater (DeAnna Pellecchia and Ingrid Schatz) continues to explore themes of female aggression in their work. They will present two new pieces in which liquid movement alternates with guarded strength to create emotionally charged images exploring fear, control and security in the context of our changing attitudes towards the roles that women play over the course of their lifetime.
Micki Taylor-Pinney, director of the dance program, has created the third section of a trilogy, Taking Inventory, Take 3 with Ann Brown Allen and Lynn Modell. This section is titled Why Do You (Still) Dance? These three mature dancers compare notes - what motivates and inspires them, while contemplating what has changed or persisted.
Stirrings, a new collaboration between choreographer Margot Parsons and composer Ai Isshiki, is a duet for Nicole DeVicci and Christine McDowell. The piece is a study of light and dark, individuality and collective involvement. Their movement morphs, adapts, and winds itself around the shifting energy of the moment.
DANCE SHOWCASE - page 2 of 3
Stephanie Creary, alumna and former assistant director of the dance program, has created Timed Release inspired by her current experience as a PhD student in the organization studies program at Boston College. She is joined by Bess Rouse (former managing director of Anna Myer and Dancers) and Christina Harrison with original music and live accompaniment by Ai Isshiki and Sukiko Mori. This work is also a premiere.
Teen apprentices from the summer outreach program, Reach, will perform a KRUMP piece, choreographed by Ashton Lites, now a freshman at Dean College. These young exuberant dancers have mastered this street dance style that has connections to cartoon characters, competitions, clowning, and ecstatic movement.
BBII is the pre-professional program in residence at Boston Ballet under the direction of Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen and Assistant Artistic Director Russell Kaiser. Members of BBII are young dancers of outstanding ability from around the world. BBII members gain professional exposure and train with Boston Ballet artistic staff, company members, as well as with guest choreographers, stagers and directors from distinguished American and international companies. A major part of their performance education is understudying and appearing regularly on stage with Boston Ballet. BBII also performs its own repertoire throughout the Greater Boston Community. The repertory for Dance Showcase will be announced at a later date.
Lighting design for the concert is by Lynda Rieman.
Boston University Dance Theater is at 915 Commonwealth Avenue with the entrance on Buick Street; the theater is wheelchair accessible.
Tickets are $15; $12 (Boston Dance Alliance card holders); $10 (students and Boston University community with ID). For reservations: 617/358-2500.

One minute, Cavaradossi is musing on his latest painting—and the diva Tosca, his beautiful, jealous lover. The next, he’s in prison with someone’s jackboot on his neck. Tosca’s options? Betrayal or rape. There are no good choices. Puccini storms the darkest of subjects with music passionate and lyrical.
Music by Giacomo Puccini
Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, after Victorien Sardou’s 1887 play, La Tosca

First round of applications are due on August 6th for the November 5th performance
Movement at the Mills Application Program Overview: Movement at the Mills is a program designed to meet clearly identified and unmet needs in the discipline of dance. In Boston, it remains difficult for smaller, local dance companies to find sufficient space in which to display their creative work. Movement at the Mills will engage local dance companies in an informal, community performance at the Mills Gallery, specifically aimed at reconnecting the Boston Center for the Arts with the Massachusetts dance scene. Movement at the Mills will invite 3 local, independent dance companies to showcase complete or in-progress works. The audience will be invited to walk through the space and view an “exhibit” of various movement styles; rather than artwork being displayed, it will be dance that is displayed. Performances are free and open to the public. Audience members are welcome to come and go as they please throughout the evening.
Movement at the Mills performances in 2010 hosted an averaged of 200 audience members per performance. Artists must submit proposals and be accepted to participate in this program. A variety of dance styles are encouraged to apply - novice, professional, folk, cultural, etc. Companies will be awarded 12 hours of free rehearsal space at the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA). The Movement at the Mills program is intended to occur three times a year with an ongoing application submission process.
Upcoming Movement at the Mills performances are scheduled for November 5, 2010, March 4, 2011, and May 6, 2011.
Additional Artist Information: The Mills Gallery is a fairly “raw” space - white walls, painted plywood floor, and numerous small nooks throughout the gallery. This program is designed to use the Mills Gallery in an unexpected way and to showcase dance in an atypical performance setting. There will be no stage lights or audience seating, as found in standard dance performances. The gallery will be separated into three spaces – One Main Stage, approx 14ft x 42ft and two Secondary Stages near the Mills Gallery front windows, approx 17ft x 16ft & 15ft x 16ft. Please see our website to download a Mills Gallery floor plan. www.bcaonline.org. Or contact Andrea for a tour of the space. The Main Stage will have control of the sound system, marley on the floor, and will be the more structured aspect of the performance. Within each Secondary Stage dancers will be invited to perform improvisational or set pieces with a small number of dancers, due to limited space. All stages will be performing in an overlapping manner to create an “exhibit” environment. Performance time will total approximately 1 – 1.5 hours and will cycle through two times. First round at 6:00; second round at 7:30. Each company will be awarded 20-25 minutes (per rotation) on the Main Stage to be divided however they wish. Secondary Stage performance slots will be less structured and will vary depending on who would like to perform. All pieces must be determined at least four weeks before performance. Although companies may show current repertory, this program is focused on the use of an alternative performance space and artists may be asked to adapt current work or create site-specific work for the performance. We encourage artists to propose work inspired by the Mills Gallery space that will showcase dance in unexpected, site-specific ways.
Application: Please include: - Resume or letter describing your choreographic background and training. - A sample of your current work, no longer than 10 minutes, either via DVD or web link. This sample should either be an entire work or a single section from a longer piece. Edited samples from numerous dances will not be considered. - A company bio and up to three web-ready images, that may be used for publicity purposes if your company is chosen for this program. - Any company or individual materials. i.e. photos, marketing pieces, etc. (optional)
Please answer the following questions: - What is your overall mission or dance philosophy? - How would this program affect your company? Where do you see your company, work, self at this point in time? - How does your work sample relate to what you would show in the Mills Gallery? - Do you have any thoughts on how you would utilize the Mills Gallery space? How would you use the space differently than a regular performance setting? -
Please describe the pieces that you would like to perform and include: A brief description of your concept. The number of dancers in each piece. Do you need any special props, sound, tech, etc for your performance? We require that necessary technical equipment, be provided by the artist.
The Movement at the Mills program is intended to occur three times a year with an ongoing submission process. Applications received by August 6, 2010 will be considered for the November 5, 2010 performance. Applications received by December 1, 2010 will be considered for the March 4, 2011 performance. Applications received by February 11, 2011 will be considered for the May 6, 2011 performance. Artists will be notified 6-8 weeks before performance of their candidacy. An emperor unleashes total war. He orders destruction. He orders death. But Death…Well, Death doesn’t take orders. Now what? In 1943, composer Viktor Ullmann and poet Petr Kien were prisoners in the concentration camp Terezin, where they created this almost inconceivably wry and touching opera. They died at Auschwitz. Their opera survives—an allusive, haunting, texturally rich testament to their spirit.
The performance will include the world premiere of a prologue, composed by Richard Beaudoin, and specially commissioned by Boston Lyric Opera.
Music by Viktor Ullmann | Libretto by poet Petr Kien | Sung in English
BLO premiere and new BLO production
BLO’s Opera Annex is a fully staged production designed for an alternative space outside the traditional opera theater.

Agrippina wants her rotten son to be the emperor of Rome. What’s a mother to do? She promises anything to everyone standing in her way: Nero himself, an ambitious courtesan, a general, a couple of fawning sycophants, and half the Roman Senate. Also her husband, current emperor Claudius. The numbers are staggering. No, really. Handel’s music soars. Come delight in his fresh musical invention and some crazy, hothouse humanity.
Music by George Frideric Handel | Libretto by Vincenzo Grimani
Sung in Italian with projected English translation
