Pro/Motion – week of October 16

Although leaves are falling, dance is picking up this season! The color of leaves aren’t the only things changing: we’re working on remodeling our weekly Pro/Motion newsletter to keep it filled with all the events and opportunities you’ve come to expect, while making it easier to navigate. BDA Member Events This Week

Join The Dance Complex for the first Learning to Walk the Talk Series session of the 2023-24 season. Responding to Artistic Process and Products features a panel of guest artists including Christopher Edwards and Roxanna Myhrum, facilitated by Peter DiMuro on Tuesday, October 17, from 6:00-7:15 PM. Event is free to attend and is fully virtual.

Catch a free preview performance of Flamenco Certamen USA; the nation’s only competition for up-and-coming flamenco artists. Features six dancers, two live musicians, a singer and a guitarist. Wednesday, October 18, 7-8 PM, at the Windhover Center for the Performing Arts.

Don’t miss an opportunity to learn Cha Cha Dance with Dance Caliente. Whether you want to impress on the dance floor, improve your fitness, or just have a great time, this Workshop is for you. Come alone or with a partner – everyone is welcome! Wednesday, October 18, 7:00-8:30 PM at the Medford Library.

Join Sabrina Aviles for a Concha Jareño Workshop at the Dance Complex and at the Tony Williams Dance Center. She’ll be leading choreography workshops and technique workshops on Thursday, October 19 thru Sunday, October 22. Class fee is $45 for a single class, $160 for a full workshop, $310 for two workshops and $450 for three. Take a master class with Boston Ballet’s principal dancer Chrystyn Fentroy at Northeast Arts. Saturday, October 21, 10 AM. Registration: $22.

Boston Dance Film Festival features multiple short films from artists in the Boston area, followed by a Q&A with the artists. Saturday, October 21, 6:30 PM at the Apple Cinemas Cambridge, 168 Alewife Brook Parkway. Tickets are $20.

Boston’s Subject:Matter explores where tap dance has been, where it’s going, and what it looks like right now. The company performs the world premiere With Far Hand that features exciting explorations in tap dance composition along with excerpts from Songbook. Q&A with the company follows Friday’s performance. Friday & Saturday, October 20-21, 8 PM at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Tickets are $48, and $44 for Global Arts Live members.

Join detritus dance for a creative and lively evening at Rooted Cafe at The Center for Arts at the Armory in Somerville, MA. This event is FREE, and donations of any amount are encouraged.  Donations benefit detritus dance’s campaign for “Malefica,” a dance-theater production! At Collage and Sip, you’ll have the chance to create your own collage artwork while enjoying a variety of delicious sips and bites for purchase at Rooted Cafe & Bar. Aftab Dance Group is looking for new members for its 2023-2024 season! This recreational Iranian dance group run by students and young professionals in the Boston area, has been performing at various cultural events in the Greater Boston and New England area for over 15 years. Dancers who are committed and passionate about Persian dance and sharing the beauty of Iran’s diverse and rich culture with the community are encouraged to audition on Sunday, October 29. Complete and submit the application form to be considered. Applicants will receive email confirmation with additional information.
