Convergence
BoSoma Dance Company presents CONVERGENCE, an evening of movement inspired by the multitude of ways in which art, culture, and society endlessly merge and intersect. This Fall Season Concert, presented over two weekends, is on Friday, October 28th and Saturday, November 5th at 8pm in the Boston University Dance Theatre, 915 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston. Artistic Director and Choreographer Katherine Hooper will debut three new works. These works are influenced by a museum art installation, the vibrant quality of projected images, and the artistic costume design of greater-Boston costume designer Chris Hynds.
MIMESES uses multiple projectors to bring a multi-layered world to the stage, offering an experience that will transport audiences through a kaleidoscope of imagery and movement. As environments change, how does the human spirit respond. Explore the adaptation of one’s characteristics in response to the need to survive within a specific environment as it plays out on stage in an intriguing narrative sure to excite.
CONVERGENCE was inspired by Anila Qyayyum Agha’s installation, Intersections, on display at the Peabody Essex Museum. It offered people of all cultures a room of reflection through light and beauty. Hooper, in collaboration with costume designer Chris Hynds, has created a narrative of a group of 10 individuals, inhabiting sacred ground as they work together to move forward collectively through resilience, empathy, and a commitment to making collective change.
Bringing a playful, light-hearted, jazz-inspired piece to life, Hooper’s new Train Stop Shuffle pokes fun at the conversations, or lack thereof, and mundane interactions that occur as we hurry up and wait for public transportation.
In continuation of BoSoma’s support of young dance companies by providing performance opportunities, BoSoma welcomes Opening Acts on each performance evening. On October 28th we are proud to present Street Punx, a hip-hop company for dancers under the age of 18 led by Tony Tucker, a professional dancer/choreographer currently performing with BoSoma. On November 5th we will welcome Aurora Borealis Dance Company, a group of aspiring professional dancers under the age of 20, specializing in contemporary and improvisational dance.
Creative costume design and electrifying integration of BoSoma’s intense, precise, and passionate dance layered with multiple projected images make this program both exciting and innovative. DON’T MISS IT! Tickets run from $20-$40 and are available at BoSoma.org.
