Many dancers of today have been influenced by contemporary pioneers of the past, but few have a direct lineage with dancers of those pioneers. The youngest of five professional dance artists, choreographer Rebecca Rice hosts a discussion sharing her unique family history through stories, videos and photography. Her family, including her grandmother, Marion Rice—a Denishawn dancer and long term student of Ted Shawn and Ruth St Denis, her aunt, Carolyn Brown—twenty years lead dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, her mother—a performer/educator and student of Consuelo Atlas of the Ailey Company and her sister Robin, all performed and danced together. Rebecca discusses how this family experience influenced her creative voice as a professional dance artist.
