Hip Hop Intensive Join Urbanity August 15-18 and celebrate Boston’s Hip Hop dance culture with programs for both teens and adults.  Each class will explore a different focus, including Popping, Dance Hall, Shuffle/House and Krump. The Hip Hop Dance Intensive is designed so that students can experience a range of styles and have opportunities to grow individually and with peers. Open to all levels with experience in hip hop dance suggested!

 

In celebration of the Colby College Museum of Art exhibitionAlex Katz: Theater and Dance, join the opening day conversation between artist Alex Katz, curator Robert Storr, and Michael Novak, Artistic Director of Paul Taylor Dance Company, moderated by Colby Museum Katz Consulting Curator Levi Prombaum. There will be opportunities to view the exhibition and enjoy refreshments in the museum lobby before and after the conversation in Given Auditorium Tuesday, August 16, 10:30 AM. The exhibition will be open until February 19, 2023.

Windhover Center for the Performing Arts‘ special benefit event offers great food, music and live modern dance on Tuesday, August 16, 6 PM under the new tent in the back garden. The Windhover Benefit will celebrate the magic and beauty of Windhover with a special guest pop-up dance performance by Cornfield Dance.

Dancing Arts Center in Holliston opens its doors and gets ready for fall semester classes for ages 3 to adult on Wednesday August 17 and Thursday August 18 with an eye towards the 2022 Nutcracker.

 

Cornfield Dance performs at a free community pop-up in Rockport’s Millbrook Meadow Park on Thursday, August 18 at 3 PM and 6 PM. The world premiere of The Wasp in the Window and Other Dances follows at Windhover Center for Performing Arts on Saturday, August 20, and Sunday, August 21 at 3 PM.

 

Battle of the Big Bands Round 1 in February 2020 ended in a draw. Choreographer Ali Kenner Brodsky presents new work from her forthcoming project, moments, a multifaceted performance piece of dance, music and art that has been in development over the past five years  moments is a dance-theater work which explores memory, loss and love. on Thursday, August 18, 7:30 – 8:30 PM at the Jamestown Arts Center in Rhode Island.

 

Mayor Michelle Wu and the Office of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment host the City’s Summer Dance Party Series on City Hall Plaza. This family-friendly event series, featuring salsa, kizomba, R&B, and house music, is free and open to the public. Join the Kizomba dance party this Friday, August 19 from 5 PM to 8 PM, at the City Hall Plaza. DJ Shy will be playing kizomba music and Kwality Kiz will be providing dance lessons.

Jacob’s Pillow Community Workshop: Hustle Dance With Abdiel. This partner dance with roots in Afro-Latin vernacular dance forms was popularized during the disco era and continues to evolve today. Participants will explore lead and follow connection, hustle rhythm, timing, and footwork. This form takes a gender-neutral approach to partnered movement; each participant will learn elements of leading and following. This is an open-level class; all levels are welcome. The Boston Salsa Festival features workshops and performances by world-class dancers and instructors, not to mention your favorite local salsa, bachata, and kizomba companies. Dance the night away to live music and Boston’s best DJs. The event is organized by salseros and DJs, Andres Giraldo and Hernan Choque.Friday, August 19 to Sunday, August 21.

 

The 16 Annual Provincetown Dance Festival takes place in two weekends filled with great performances. This weekend watch Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Fukudance, tap virtuoso, Khalid Hill, Drumatix and Sara Haarmann of the Mark Morris Dance Group. It happens Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20, shows start at 7 PM at Sam’s Stage at The Truro Center for the Arts, Edgewood Campus.

 

Jamaica Plain’s Annual Porch Fest is back August 20 from12-6pm, a celebration of the cultural and artistic diversity of JP. ,This year the festival’s focus highlights JP’s BIPOC community, spotlighting and centering BIPOC artists and creatives, and presenting have two main stages curated by BIPOC led community partner organizations. Saturday, August 20, 12 – 6 PM

Boston Ballet announces their Citydance 30 documentary will air on NBC 10 Boston starting August 20 at 7 PM with encore airings and on-demand viewing opportunities on NBC10 Boston, NECN, and Spanish-language Telemundo. It will also be available to stream on the NBC and Telemundo Boston websites. This one-hour special produced with NBC and Telemundo Boston highlights Boston Ballet’s 30-year commitment to dance education in Boston and partnership with Boston Public Schools.

 

Jacob’s Pillow Freestyle Dance Battle Dancers representing a wide range of styles—including artists from the outdoor performance of East Coast Styles the day before—compete for a $1,000 first-place prize in this lively battle hosted by the legendary Princess Lockerooo and judged by Maria Torres, Michele Byrd-McPhee, and Buddha Stretch. Join as a participant or an observer.

Jo-Mé Dance celebrates its 10-year anniversary! Experience past and current dancers (from youth to professionals) in excerpts of some of Jo-Mé Dance favorites. The evening honors the original founding members of Jo-Mé Dance with  a performance, dinner, and an open dance floor. Silent auction and donation opportunities will be available throughout the entire night. Sunday, August 21 at Boston University Dance Theater, 915 Commonwealth Ave. Doors open at 5:30 PM, event goes from 6:30 PM to 10 PM.

Mass Cultural Council grant applications are open for two special Covid relief programs.
Cultural Sector Recovery Grants for Organizations provides unrestricted grants ranging from $5,000-$75,000 to Massachusetts cultural organizations, collectives, and businesses.
Cultural Sector Recovery Grants for Individuals offer unrestricted grants of $5,000 to creatives and gig workers.

 

FY23 Arts and Culture Community Impact Grant Fund of Combined Jewish Philanthropies supports artists, enriches our community through culture, and explores the depth of Jewish experience and memory. Applicants may apply as an individual or as a collaboration among multiple artists. One $25,000 grant for a multidisciplinary collaborative project that includes Jewish and BIPOC artists (may be the same people) plus 10 $7,500 grants.  Letters of Intent due by 5:00 p.m. August 31.

 

Liquid Spine, a dance and film series, has opened submission for eco-arts films for a MAGMA festival September 17, which is International Coastal Cleanup Day. Submissions are currently open to artists who use their medium to illuminate the beauty of our natural world or to strive for environmental activism.

 

Urbanity is offering both video auditions and in-studio auditions for their Creative Class on Sunday, August 21, 10:00 -11:30 AM at UDHQ. Led by Company Director Meg Anderson, the In-Studio audition will incorporate aspects of ballet, modern, jazz, and contemporary techniques. They are looking for dancers with training in contemporary dance, as well as expertise in other genres. All are welcome!

 

City Ballet of Boston is looking for experienced dancers with strong ballet technique for the 2022 production of Anthony Williams’ Urban NutcrackerPerformances will be December 17-23 at the historic Boch Center Shubert Theatre. Auditions  include a 1.5-hour ballet class. After class, dancers may be asked to stay to learn sections of Urban Nutcracker choreography. Please bring your resume/CV, headshot and pointe shoes to the audition. If you are auditioning for a dance style other than ballet, please prepare a short piece to demonstrate your abilities. Masks are required for the audition. Sunday, August 21, 10:30 AM-1:00 PM at the Tony Williams Dance Center in Jamaica Plain.
